- : 1. Where can she purchase modem/software for dial up access to the Net?
- I use A-Talk3, which is several years old, but works quite well. There are
- several others available commercially and in shareware. Get a copy of
- Amazing/Amiga magazine for sources. You can get an external serial modem
- from just about any computer or electronics store. Perhaps the best choice
- would be a 14.4K bps version (low price and almost fastest speed). Save the
- software that comes with it, in case you decide to get a Mac or PC later.
-
- : 2. Are there online resources I can download? If so, where?
- There is much to get on line. Aminet (also available on CDROM) has alot of
- software. If you have web browsing access somewhere, start at
- http://www.omnipresence.com for links to good software sites. Get a copy
- of MUI, AmiTCP, and Mosaic to start. Instead of Mosaic, if you find AWeb,
- that also is good, and easier to set up than Mosaic.
-
- : 3. Suggestions for freeware/shareware tools for usenet, mail, etc.
- Get Mosaic or AWeb working first. Then you can check out all the links to
- AmiNet and some of the other places.
-
- : 4. She has not used her Amiga for some years. She has been toiling in the
- : broadcast arena(Paintbox, etc). Are there enough resources available for
- her
- : to go back to the Amiga ..or would she be better off going
- : with a new Mac or PC?
- Many of the most popular artwork and graphics programs on the other platforms
- actually started on the Amiga. I believe that much if not all of the
- functionality you will find in the other platforms will be found in software
- for the Amiga. And usually the prices are _much_ lower on the Amiga. Of
- course there is always the risk of doing your work on a relatively rare
- platform such as the Amiga. But on the other hand, when operating system
- upgrages come out, you usually don't have to throw out most of your software
- and buy it (again), as you often do on PCs and Macs. Animation on the Amiga
- is _still_ the best.
-
- Also strongly suggested for modernizing an older Amiga:
- - a bigger hard drive (actually, 500Mb drives are very cheap and likely to be
- all you need. Amiga software is not nearly as large as PC and Mac versions.)
- - the latest version of the operating system (3.1)
- - an improved video display. The "Flicker Fixer" is actually very good, but
- for advanced graphics applications, check out some of the 24bit display cards.
-
- Good luck.
